What does a dispensary SEO expert do?

Almost every dispensary search happens within a few miles of the store. Someone types "dispensary near me" or a product name into Google, or asks an assistant for the closest option, and the first three map results get most of the attention. A dispensary SEO expert works on being one of those three in every neighborhood the store can serve.

Guillermo founded Foottraffik in 2017 to do that work for dispensaries, sold it to MediaJel in 2021 and launched Nearfront in October 2025 to run the same playbook with AI agents. Nearfront takes single stores and multi-location operators, and every engagement starts with a ranking grid for each location.

What the work covers

Every location gets its own Google Business Profile, kept current on categories, attributes, hours, products and photos, because the profile is what the map pack ranks. Nearfront agents handle the routine updates so nothing goes stale between store visits.

Reviews are the part most stores let slide. Nearfront sends the request over iMessage, so reviews keep arriving week after week. Citations across the directories customers and Google both read get built and corrected in the same pass.

The site then has to answer what people actually search for: product categories, store hours, deals, delivery zones and the questions new customers ask before their first visit. Each answer gets marked up so Google and AI assistants can quote it directly.

Measurement runs on a grid. Nearfront checks rankings from points spread across the city, so a store can see the blocks where it wins and the ones a competitor owns, next to Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile data in one dashboard.

Twelve months with a dispensary brand

The figures below come from an anonymized Nearfront client over a twelve month window.

  • 71 to 564Keywords ranking in the top three positions
  • 9,000+Lapsed customers who came back and ordered again
  • $2.2MRevenue recovered from those customers
Anonymized Nearfront client. Customers averaged 228 days since their last order, and the win-back campaigns ran through Tact Firm.

Acquisition was half of it. The same brands ran win-back campaigns through Tact Firm for customers who had not ordered in 228 days on average, and more than 9,000 of them came back, which is where the $2.2M figure comes from.

Three checks an owner can run today

Search your store name and "dispensary near me" on a phone from a mile or two away, and note where you land. Read your last ten Google reviews and look at how recent they are. Then compare the hours, phone number and address on your website, your Google Business Profile and the directories customers use, and fix anything that disagrees.

A store that ranks only near its own front door, gets a new review every few weeks or shows different hours in different places has found its first three problems. A grid report measures each one across the whole city.

Dispensaries with more than one location

Two stores in the same city compete with each other in the map pack unless their profiles, pages and review flows are set up to cover different ground. Foottraffik managed Google Business Profiles at scale for multi-location dispensary retail, and Nearfront does the same work with agents handling the repetitive parts across every store.

Dispensary SEO questions

What does dispensary SEO include?

A Google Business Profile for every location, review requests that keep coming in, citations across the directories Google reads, pages that answer what customers search for, and local ranking grids that show where each store stands. Nearfront also tracks whether Google AI Overviews, Gemini and ChatGPT mention the brand. Reporting pulls live data from Search Console, GA4 and Google Business Profile.

Why is my dispensary not showing up in the map pack?

The usual causes are a Google Business Profile with the wrong categories or missing details, reviews that arrive too slowly, business information that disagrees across directories, and a website with nothing specific to that location. Distance matters too, since the map pack ranks differently in every neighborhood. A grid report shows exactly where a store drops out of the top three.

How does Nearfront collect dispensary reviews?

Review requests go out automatically over iMessage, which is where most customers already read their messages. Steady requests produce steady reviews, and a steady flow is what Google responds to. Staff do not have to remember to ask.

Can SEO bring back customers who stopped ordering?

Search brings in new customers, and retention work brings back the ones you already had. Nearfront connects to Tact Firm email and SMS campaigns for exactly that. Across two dispensary brands those campaigns reached customers who had not ordered in 228 days on average, brought back more than 9,000 of them and recovered $2.2M in revenue.

Do you work with dispensaries outside California?

Yes. Guillermo is based in San Diego, and Nearfront and BlueMap work with clients across North America. The rules and the search language change from state to state, which is part of what the work accounts for.
